Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the excavation of two ponds, dug in order to facilitate the translocation of newts from a site which was due to be destroyed by development. An Iron Age settlement had been excavated c. 300m to the south-east of the ponds. A geophysical survey carried out prior to excavation had identified no anomalies of archaeological significance. During the watching brief, modern field drains were encountered, but no earlier archaeological features were revealed. Post-medieval pottery and modern brick and ceramics were recovered. It was noted that the large size and unabraded nature of the finds may have indicated a post-medieval site in the vicinity. [AIP] |
