Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development. Evidence indicated that the site lay on the limits of the medieval town of Chertsey. The front part of the site may lie in an area of moderate to high archaeological potential. The archaeological potential for the rear part of the site was also moderate to high as this represented the backland area of the medieval settlement. Relict river channels could have existed on the site, although there was no evidence for such at present, it was, however, unlikely that the development works would go deep enough to affect such features to any significant degree. Later disturbance might have disturbed archaeological deposits, but this could not be said to totally preclude the likelihood of medieval and earlier remains still surviving. The archaeological potential for the rear part of the site was less likely to have been affected by late historical development, although shallow deposits may have been disturbed by the construction of the current car park.
