Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of three pits for the planting of trees, at a site which lay within the bounds of Norwich Castle SAM, one of the most archaeologically sensitive parts of the city. A Saxon church and associated graveyard had been excavated close to the site, the known burial area lying only 18m to the north-east. The results of further excavation work in advance of nearby construction suggested that the tree pits lay close to the junction of the castle's north-eastern bailey ditch and the barbican ditch, and that the pits themselves probably lay within the north-east bailey. During the watching brief, 1m of topsoil overlying a compacted rubble made up of broken bricks and concrete was observed in all three test-pits. A redeposited architectural fragment was recovered from Pit C. This proved to be a fragment of a medieval door jamb with two parallel rebates, which had perhaps once formed part of the central pillar of two doorways set side by side. It had probably come from a secular rather than an ecclesiastical building. [AIP]
