Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment revealed that the street was part of a medieval grid created by the expansion of the town in the late 11th century. The site was partly covered by a warehouse which was built in the late 19th century over the site of small dwellings and stables. One of these dwellings was occupied in the early 19th century by the Reffell family who were clay pipe makers and other parts had been used by staymakers and tailors. There was a break in the documentary sources between 1546 and the late 17th century. In the late medieval period it was possible to identify some of the residents of the street and link the town rental back to the 15th century, when all the properties listed were on the western side of the street. The earliest rental of 1295 named the street as 'Eldbaxster' and it was of interest to note that it was called old even at that date. There was scope for further documentary research. [Au(adp)] |
