Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches and a pipe trench within a rear yard. All of the trenches lay adjacent to a substantial surviving section of the city wall, and the service trench ran up to its projected line. The foundation trenches were located on roughly the same plan as two Victorian outbuildings which had stood in the yard until recently. During the watching brief, it was observed that all of the yard area was covered in disturbed, redeposited Victorian garden soil to a depth of 0.3-0.4m. A late post-medieval or Victorian wall foundation was seen in the eastern arm of the southern trench. This was probably part of an earlier set of outbuildings, perhaps contemporary with the original construction of 69-73 St. Augustines Street. A deposit which may have been part of the upper backfill of the city ditch was noted. The wall foundation was also encountered in the service trench, and a small fragment of the city wall foundation was observed. A pre-existing sewer pipe cut through the city wall foundations; it seemed highly likely that any remains immediately further to the west had been largely destroyed by the construction of and subsequent alterations to 67 and 69 St. Augustines Street.
