Abstract: |
A single evaluation trench was excavated. Natural gravel at c.10.3m OD was overlain by brickearth, which was truncated at c.11.1m OD by a 19th or 20th century basement. Three truncated rubbish and cess pits, probably dating from the 18th century, survived beneath the basement. These were probably associated with terraced buildings built along Fieldgate Street some time between 1755 and 1819. The evaluation showed that there was little or no potential for the survival of archaeological remains on the site from before the late 17th or 18th century. There was potential for the survival of truncated post-medieval pits similar to those seen in the evaluation trench, of low local significance only. Within the area of the development, the evaluation showed that there was a modern basement, which may well have extended across the whole of the footprint of the new building, and similar levels of truncation and survival to those seen in the evaluation may be expected.
