Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief undertaken during redevelopment of the site of Old Pit, Clandown, the earliest coalmine in Radstock, recorded some remains of early 19th century buildings and spreads of 19th and 20th century demolition deposits. These features were situated in the extreme south-east corner of the development site. Most of the redevelopment area was proved to be sited upon deposits of coal waste which extended beyond the area of the 19th century waste tip and which were also earlier than the 19th century structures recorded during the construction works. The watching brief clarified the position of the 18th and 19th century pit head buildings and probably identified the position of the main pit shaft. [Au] |
