Abstract: |
An extensive survey at the site of Sutton Hoo illustrated the siting of the monument with respect to the local topography. The site lay at the boundary of two distinct landscapes with the valley of the Deben estuary falling away steeply to the west and the open flat heathland towards th east; and where the 7th century builders constructed a group of mounds over a set of prominent natural features. These features - promontories and the heads of shallow combes - continued further north along the shoulders of the valley of the river Deben. The report illustrated the condition of the monument and the changes in the topography of the re-modelled site following the completion of the excavation campaign. [Au] |
