Abstract:
A resistivity survey of an open space within a residential area proposed for redevelopment was undertaken. Archaeological excavations to the south of the site in 1986-7 and 1993 had established the presence of a substantial cemetery associated with the medieval hospital of St. James. A north-south ditch of probable prehistoric date had been discovered beneath the graves. A survey of the projected line of the ditch, which crossed the proposal site, had been made using a relativey unsophisticated resistivity meter, and the results had indicated an area of relatively low resistance on the projected line of the ditch. During the 1998 survey, a north-east to south-west linear low resistance anomaly at the south-east edge of the site was found which lay precisely on the line of the northern boundary of the Liberty of St. James. The line of the prehistoric ditch was also identified, and it was noted that a line of mature trees seemed to have been planted on its western edge. These were all that remained of a field boundary visible on maps since 1769, which had once ended almost 450m north of Swanfield Drive. Further, less positive, anomalies were also found. Although some may have represented archaeological features, it was considered more likely that they had been caused by variations in the geological strata. It was concluded that the fact that medieval burials had not been revealed was probably more a result of soil conditions than an indication of the absence of such features. It was recommended that trial trenches should be excavated in order to ascertain whether or not the prehistoric ditch and the post-medieval boundary had followed the same line to the north of Swanfield Drive.
