Abstract: |
Quarter of a mile west of the parish church, set amidst rocky crags on the side of Inny Valley, lay the holy well and chapel of St Clether. The well was built in pre-Norman times although the standing structure was a reconstruction dating to the 1500s. Repair work had been carried out in the 19th century as well as in the 20th century. The modern repairs had been undertaken without the knowledge or consent of English Heritage, despite the site being a Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The current programme of repair works were to make good of what was a bad job undertaken previously. The well was fully recorded and details relating to the 19th century restoration were also studied. [AIP] |
