Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches at a development site. Two medieval moated sites lay in the vicinity of the parish, and demolition of the 19th century parish church had revealed many medieval features, including doorways and chalk cladded soil walls. A later 10th century grave cover had been recovered from the rubble infill of the church wall. Investigation of a plot adjacent to the development site had revealed two undated ditches, one of which may have been replaced by a stone wall. During the watching brief, a furrow and a ditch typical of medieval farming methods were recorded. The ditch may have been a land boundary. Artefacts retrieved included medieval and post-medieval pottery, bone and brick, and were typical of a manuring scatter. [AIP] |
