Abstract: |
Following evaluation trenching work where remains of mid Saxon date were identified an archaeological watching brief was carried out. Topsoil stripping at the southern end of the site revealed no archaeological features, whilst removal of demolition layers to the north revealed a system of sewers and cesspits that part of the original school building's underground plumbing system. To the west of the former reading room only a stone land drain, already recorded in the evaluation trenching was found, whilst a 4m X 4m x 5m pit excavated to house the development's pumping station revealed no archaeological features.
