Abstract: |
A desktop survey was undertaken in order to assess the archaeological potential of a c.4200 sq. m plot of land comprising the walled garden associated with Sheringham Hall prior to the building of a tennis court. The walled garden was contemporary with the laying out of Sheringham Park, designed by the landscape gardener Humphrey Repton in the early 19th century. The available documentary, cartographic and archaeological data suggested a low potential for the existence of archaeological features or deposits predating the building of the garden though subsurface features associated with earlier uses of the walled garden may be revealed. The watching brief recorded linear trenches cut into the natural sands which probably served as bedding trenches. [Au(abr)] |
