Abstract: |
Three evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of development work for a temporary surface water drain. No archaeological features were present within Trench 1. An east-west aligned ditch identified by geophysical survey was located centrally within Trench 2. The ditch, believed to be a post-medieval field boundary, predated the stone constructed field drains. Post-medieval land drains were present at the northern end of the trench, whilst the eastern and southern sides of the trench were heavily disturbed, probably by opencast mining. Trench 3 had been subject to opencast activity, so that the excavated surface of the trench was made-up ground rather than natural material. The presence of flint artefacts recovered from Trenches 1 and 2 showed earlier prehistoric activity had taken place on or within close vicinity to the site. [Au(adp)] |
