Abstract: |
A single evaluation trench, three metres square, was excavated towards the western end of the site. Up to c.1.4m of archaeological deposits were found. The archaeological sequence began in the 11th or 12th centuries with quarrying which was followed by large scale terracing. By the 13th or 14th century there was evidence that the Timberhill frontage was built up. In the late medieval period, further levelling of the sloping ground took place. This was followed by the possible construction of a high status building at the western end of the plot. The evidence for this building consisted of a substantial garderobe and two other possible structural features. By the 17th or 18th centuries the building shown on the OS 1885 plan, including The Lion and Castle public house, seemed to have come into existence. It was likely that these buildings were demolished in 1959 or 1960 when Westlegate House, the large office tower block on Westlegate, was built. [Au(abr)] |
