Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken along the south bank of the River Tyne at Corbridge during the removal of the existing flood defence system. A worn cobbled surface of probable seventeenth century date was encountered below the flood plain alluvium approximately 45m west of the present bridge at Corbridge. Also a revetment wall of Roman date was located adjacent to the site of the Roman bridge. This wall probably represented the southwest retaining wall of a previously unknown road ramp leading up to this bridge and as such was a highly significant addition to the knowledge of the Roman infrastructure surrounding Corbridge.
