Abstract: |
An archaeologcial desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to proposed retail development. The assessment indicated that, although there were no known archaeological remains within the development area, it did have considerable archaeological potential. Being on the edge of the historic core of Oakham, near to known Saxon (in particular a known sunken feature building 25m from the site), and medieval sites and important standing buildings, in a general area of known prehistoric and Roman settlement and occupying a streamside location, the development area may have similarly contained important archaeological remains. The report recommended further investigation in the form of trial trenching. [Au(adp)] |
