Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken at 2 Church Street, Epsom prior to conversion of the standing building and construction of an extension, in order to create a new public house. The County Sites and Monuments Record, early maps and documentary sources were consulted. The site was determined to have some archaeological potential due to remains known in the surrounding area, but there was nothing in the SMR relating directly to the site. The Roman Stane Street passed through Epsom and there was evidence of Saxon activity nearby too. Buildings were known to have stood on the site from the 17th century, it was noted that these may have damaged any archaeology which was present. A watching brief was recommended. [AIP] |
