Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment was undertaken on land proposed for mining at Branch End Farm. The only archaeological site listed in the SMR was an undated linear earthwork in the south-west corner of the Proposal Area. The industrial archaeology of the site was of interest in that it related to the important Stublick Colliery which may have had early origins, although pre-18th century evidence had yet to be found. There was an extensive and varied landscape of mining features on the surface, and it was considered that there might be surviving below ground evidence. The potential for prehistoric remains was deemed to be low, much of the site had been disturbed by previous coal working, although the potential for artefact scatters below the peat which covered part of the site existed.
