Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a site proposed for mineral extraction. Earlier desk-top assessment had identified the possibility that three Bronze Age barrows had survived in the southern part of the site. A walk-over survey conducted as part of the assessment had retrieved two flint flakes and two sherds of medieval pottery. During the evaluation, two small undated ditches, an undated pit and a post-medieval ditch were revealed, but no trace of the barrows was found. It was considered possible that these, which had previously been identified from aerial photographs, had been ploughed away. Fieldwalking was undertaken across part of the site, but only four artefacts, comprising a possible flint flake, a possible flint core, a sherd of medieval pottery and a pebble which had been subjected to intense heat, were recovered. A magnetometer survey was also carried out, but no archaeological features were identified, although low magnetic fluctuations were noted in one area. Finds recovered during the evaluation were limited, and included a sherd of 20th century pottery, an iron ploughshare, an iron harrow tine and the base of a cauldron. [AIP]
