Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken in order to investigate the accuracy of a plan of the Quaker burial ground and to determine the amount of space remaining for future interments. A resistivity survey proved inconclusive, therefore limited excavation was undertaken. This was intended to reveal the grave cuts into the subsoil at a level immediately below the topsoil, and was not required to reach the full depth of the burials. The first internment was that of Abraham Darby II on 3rd April 1763 while the last inhumation was believed to have been on 18th January 1937. Cremated remains had been lain to rest here subsequently. The combination of fieldwork and research found that the existing plan of the graveyard was reasonably accurate. It was clear from the plan that the degree of intercutting of graves was relatively low; moreover all inhumations were well recorded. The integrity of the graves was also preserved by the close-knit nature of the community, and burials from the same family appeared to be clustered together in groups. This view was borne out by the excavation results, which showed five distinct graves with sufficient space around them. If the lower part of the graveyard had been entirely filled, then one would have expected a greater intensity on the pattern of inhumations in this part of the site - leading to less well-defined grave cuts. Therefore it was reasonable to conclude that the plan was broadly correct, and that there were no inhumations in the northern corner of the graveyard. [Au(adp)]
