Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the Environment Agency to carry out archaeological recording of a section of vertical timberwork associated with the head apron of the Old Lock at Iffley. The recorded structure was the remains of a timber revetment comprising vertical sheathing boards, whales and king-posts, comparable to part of the revetments of Monkey Marsh Lock nearby. There appeared to be two phases of revetment. Although it was possible that some of the timbers dated back to the original pound lock of c.1630, it seemed likely that most of the revetment dated to the 18th century. [Au(abr)] |
