Abstract:
This archaeological and speleological assessment resulted from the Review of Mineral Planning Permissions by Derbyshire County Council, for which Deepwood Mining Company had made a submission under the terms of the 1995 Environment Act. The report concluded that Ball Eye Quarry was located in an area of very high quality landscape both in the physical and human setting and in the quality of archaeological and speleological features within it. The degree of statutory protection given to the surrounding area was at a high, including international and national, level with the larger part of the quarry included in the buffer zone of the proposed World Heritage Site. Other statutory protection included both heritage and speleological aspects of the area immediately adjacent to the actual quarry. There was a presumption under the Review that quarrying would continue. This would lead to final landscaping and restoration that would considerably benefit the setting of the protected areas. It was also the intention of the owners that the management of heritage and speleological resources which will, or were likely to be, affected or destroyed, would be mitigated by full recording with archaeological excavation where necessary. Features not so destroyed within the quarry site and in the adjacent workings of the Ball Eye Mine would be managed in such a way as to allow access or heritage, scientific and recreational purposes.
