Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site revealed that the sites of several tenements and associated road routes within the proposal area were marked on 17th century maps. In the surrounding area, a number of prehistoric flint scatters and an early Saxon settlement represented by sunken-featured buildings had been recorded. Later Saxon remains had also been found. The town was known to have expanded considerably following the Norman Conquest. Documentary evidence indicated that it seemed to have begun a decline by the late 13th-14th century, although this was not apparent in the archaeological record, which indicated that stone buildings had begun to replace timber ones on St Peter's Street from the late 13th century onwards. The area seemed to have been devastated by an extensive fire in c. 1500. It was noted that the degree of ground disturbance within parts of the proposal area was uncertain, but that any surviving archaological deposits could contribute new information to existing knowledge of the Saxon town.
