Abstract: |
Since 1993, a programme of desk-based assessment, field evaluation, observations and excavation had been carried out by AC archaeology during the redevelopment of the former military base on the Mount Batten peninsula. This report serves to gather together the information from the various investigations. The broad zones of archaeological potential across the peninsula were established. A significant proportion of the site had been subject to quarrying wholly destructive of archaeological deposits. Elsewhere the presence of a Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age/Romano-British midden, possible Neolithic burials and late prehistoric or Roman field boundaries was recognised. Part of the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and it was considered that ground disturbance at or below 500mm below the present ground surface might impact on buried features there; subject to approval further archaeological evaluation was recommended in this area. Further stages of mitigation were to be determined in consultation with the Plymouth City Archaeological Officer and English Heritage. [Au(abr)] |
