Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out, which identified areas that had been covered by prehistoric field systems. A number of enigmatic mounds were located within the site and appeared to be Bronze Age barrows. The roman Stane Street passed through the site and was well defined by a raised causeway. Medieval documents recorded the road as 'Port Way', an important through road from London to Dorking. There was little evidence for Saxon activity but medieval documents suggest that a small settlement and other features may have existed. During the late-19th century the landscape was altered to accommodate country houses. The frequently occurring tree clumps, many of which still survived, must have had a considerable impact on any surviving earthworks of the former prehistoric fields. In the 20th century this designed landscape was ploughed up, obliterating surface traces of the former fields and was subjected to large-scale dumping in the 1980s, causing further damage to any archaeological remains.
