Abstract: |
The field survey demonstrated that the villa posessed a second, lower, courtyard which lay beyond the bounds of the Guardianship Area. This discovery clarified that the Great Witcombe villa attested to the style of the double-courtyard villas of the Cotswolds. The villa can be shown to have been set within a landscape of subsidiary buildings, and probable industrial activity. Tile wasters were found in the stream bed, and the magnetometry survey detected areas of debris with strong magnetic responses reminiscent of kilns and hearths to the south and north-east of the villa.[Au(abr)] |
