Abstract: |
Stowe was the site of a country house of the Grenville family. A brick built house, together with its garden layout, was built in the 1670s but abandoned and demolished in 1739. A substantial area of earthworks, with a few traces of walling visible, represented the site of the former house and gardens. A section of wall, heavily repaired in the past, adjoined an area re-used as a farmyard. Cement capping on the wall had failed and there was damage to the top caused by sheep trample. As a consequence Cornwall Archaeological Unit was commissioned by the National Trust to survey the remains so that adequate conservation measures could be carried out. [AIP] |
