Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed corridor of a gas pipeline identified that it crossed several parish boundaries and streams, and that it could affect a number of 18th century and earlier farms and settlements. Sites recorded in the surrounding area included the remains of a medieval packhorse bridge, a 17th century watermill, a windmill, a post-medieval glass-working site, lime kilns and an icehouse. Excavations at a site in the Betchworth area had revealed features ranging in date from the late Mesolithic to the Roman period, as well as evidence of medieval activity. Particular areas of interest which would be affected by the pipeline were identified, and watching briefs at a number of locations were recommended. [AIP] |
