Abstract: |
The excavation was carried to record previously identified archaeological deposits ahead of the erection of a new dwelling. Previous evaluation trenching revealed evidence of a damaged prehistoric round barrow and Anglo-Saxon inhumations. The 2004 excavations revealed a total of 14 graves, 12 of which were excavated. Eight Anglo-Saxon graves were identified, six were excavated, grave goods were sparse they included four iron knives, an iron pin fragment and an iron buckle, no associated structural iron work was identified. Half the circuit of a now destroyed round barrow which was levelled in the 1920's was recorded, there was evidence for a central, primary burial. The ditch was broken by an entrance causeway. Six contracted prehistoric inhumations, all satellite or secondary barrow burials, were identified. Other finds included: 700 pieces of prehistoric flintwork, 39 sherds of mostly prehistoric date, animal bones from the fill of the barrow ditch and a few marine shells. [AIP] |
