Abstract:
Duddon Furnace was built in 1737-8 by a partnership formed by the Backbarrow and Cunsey Companies, and was the fifth of eight charcoal-fired blast furnaces built in or close to the Furness area of Cumbria between 1771 and 1748. The consortium lasted until 1741, when the Cunsey Company took control of the site. In the early 19th century it was acquired by Harrison Ainslie and Company, who ran it until formal closure in 1885. The site, in the Duddon Valley, had a water-powered blast furnace, its waterwheel fed by a long leat taken off the River Duddon at a weir built across the river. The other buildings, apart from the structures attached to the blast furnace - wheelhouse and blowing house, casting house, charge house with bothy under - were an iron-ore store, a series of charcoal barns, and a block of cottages with an attached byre and loose box. The buildings gradually deteriorated in the century after closure, but since the Lake District National Park Authority had taken a lease of the site, it had been subject to archaeological excavation and the buildings were consolidated as ruins.
