Abstract: |
From documentary and cartographic sources it appeared that the study area could well have been a part of the formal garden of the Moat House Mansion at least in the late 18th and early 19th century. Garden features may have survived where a later tennis court had not destroyed them. Alternatively, kitchen garden items from the 19th century may have survived. There was the possibility that Romano-British ditch features and the eastern side of the medieval moat may have survived, albeit in truncated form in this area. An earlier geophysical survey had confirmed the presence of some subsurface features, albeit masked by the presence of a water pipe. These may have been small ditches or garden features, and appeared to be similar to features seen in the adjoining plot. [Au(adp)] |
