Abstract: |
The watching brief was carried out during the dredging of a section of moat at The Ropewalk and The Butts area which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (26, 55-59). The Ropewalk revealed a large amount of post-medieval material (and a small of amount of medieval) was recovered including: pottery, animal bone, bricks, tiles. This was thought to represent domestic rubbish from the town, regularly tipped in this section during the early post-medieval period, ceasing in by the 18th century. The second section of moat at The Butts revealed no finds and it appeared that the rubbish dumping had not extended this far. [Au(adp)] |
