Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment and woodland survey was carried out. Several sites of prehistoric and Romano-British origin were in the vicinity of the study area. The site was enclosed in 1819 with the plantation being established by 1839 and appeared to have been actively managed with coppicing, possibly occurring up until the mid 20th century. The northern section was heavily quarried. Cliff cottage was constructed between 1819 and 1839 and there was no evidence of earlier properties built on the site. Stables Wood was part of an area of seigniorial enclosure enacted by the Lords of Barnburgh prior to the 1819 parliamentary enclosures. The site was named as an Ancient Wood in 1819. There was evidence of coppicing during the 20th century. In the light of the site's ancient status, this suggested that Stables Wood may have been established as a spring wood during the 16th to 18th century. [Au(adp)] |
