Abstract: |
The evaluation site was located within an area of a known Roman cemetery and cremations were previously found in this location. Five trenches were excavated around the exchange. Nine cremation burials and one inhumation, all in various stages of preservation and at varying depth, were found within the north-western half of the site. The interments may have been bounded by a ditch, or sequence of ditches parallel to the nearby London Road, which is on a Roman Road alignment. A sequence of other Roman deposits and features were also revealed, including a possible metalled Roman lane at the south-eastern extremity of the site. The evaluation suggested that there may be at least 200 individual cremation burials remaining on the site.[Au(abr)] |
