Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a residential area proposed for redevelopment identified that two areas of archaeological interest lay within the proposal site. A north-south ditch which almost certainly represented a hitherto unknown branch of the Iron Age Chichester Entrenchments had been found during excavations immediately to the south, beneath the cemetery of St James's Hospital. The ditch had been traced by resistivity survey across part of the site. 'Celtic' field systems had been plotted to the north-east, and the line of a Roman road passed to the south. The hospital and cemetery of SS James and Mary Magdalene lay partly within the study area, the most likely site of the hospital buildings being in an open area within the site. It was recommended that a resistivity survey of this open area should be undertaken, in order to determine both the limits of the medieval hospital and its burials, and the line of the Iron Age ditch.
