Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during machine stripping in advance of development at the former site of Denton Hall, a manor house with a medieval core. The west wing of the house had been demolished in 1895, and a detached 15th century wing had been dismantled in the 1970s. The remainder had been destroyed by fire in the 1930s. In 1980, an excavation of the site of the 15th century wing had revealed remains of the building and an earlier cut feature, interpreted as a moat. The excavation had been abandoned before this interpretation could be confirmed, owing to a spillage of diesel fuel. Evaluation of the site in connection with the present development had located the remains of the hall and the medieval moat feature. During the watching brief, brick and sandstone footings representing both the main house and the 15th century wing were observed, and the line of the 'moat' was traced. Remains of what appeared to have been both a stone and later timber lining of the moat on the inner, southern, side were noted. [AIP] |
