Abstract: |
Two evaluation pits were excavated and eight boreholes monitored in response to a planning condition. The results revealed that significant Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval remains may have survived on the site. The report concluded that the impact of the proposed redevelopment would have been to remove around c.685 sq. m of archaeological deposits and would impact on archaeological 'cut features', such as rubbish pits. Roman deposits were observed in both boreholes and test pits. Fills of a former stream were likely to have been of Roman date. No Saxon deposits were observed but the evaluation confirmed that Saxon deposits could have survived in certain parts of the site. Medieval deposits were observed in test pits and boreholes, including dark organic fills of a medieval pit dating to 1050 to 1150. A gravel surface overlay this pit. [Au(abr)] |
