Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a pipeline which affected the Mere Bank and Mere Bank Rhine, a linear earthwork and ditch of presumed medieval origin. The pipeline route lay within an area of former seasonal wetland and reclaimed saltmarsh, with potential for well-preserved archaeological remains. During the watching brief, evidence of former drainage rhines on either side of the course of the Mere Bank was revealed, although no remains of the bank itself were preserved. With the exception of the rhines, no previously unrecorded archaeological remains were observed during the construction programme. [Au(adp)] |
