Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site. A Bronze Age palstave had been found nearby, but the main archaeological potential of the site derived from the presence of a Cistercian abbey which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. During the evaluation, a large cut feature was found to the north of the Scheduled area. This contained fine 15th century floor tiles, and was interpreted as a former cellar or undercroft. A ditch which may have been the boundary of the inner monastic precinct was also revealed. Structures and features relating to the water management system, an important element of the monastery, were recorded. It was noted that the impact of the development on remains at the site would be limited, due to the sympathetic design of the golf course and the positioning of the housing development. [Au(abr)] |
