Abstract: |
It was established that the study area had been used for cattle grazing prior to the construction of a glassworks, a leadworks, and domestic properties on the site in the 18th century. Glassworking continued on the site until 1922 when the Phoenix works finally closed to be replaced with heavy industry which continued until the site was cleared in 1988. Archaeological excavation at the western end of the site in 1988 demonstrated that despite considerable ground disturbance, the glassworks still survivied. [Auth adap] |
