Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during earthmoving associated with the construction of holiday cabins, adjacent to an existing caravan park. The site contained a c. 120m length of a curvilinear earthwork, the entirety of which measured c. 350m in length, c. 80m in maximum width, and up to 5.5m in height. This had been recorded on the Lancashire SMR. The watching brief proved conclusively that the earthwork was an esker, a natural geomorphological feature of glacial and fluvial origin, rather than being man-made. The glacial landscape in the vicinity of Carnforth had been recognised by the British Geological Survey as being a textbook example, and it was noted that opportunities to study the structure of such features were rare. A drawn and photographic record of selected cross-sections was therefore made, and the available published knowledge of the glacial geology of the area was synthesized. [Au(adp)] |
