Abstract: |
Three trenches were excavated to evaluate the archaeological potential of land proposed for development adjacent to Temple Gate within the island occupied by the Grovesnor Hotel and the George Railway Public House, to the west of Temple Meads railway station. The evaluation indicated the presence of the Portwall and possibly its ditch, as well as medieval deposits and the possible location of the Austin Friary. A property relating to the George Inn was also evidenced by the presence of a wall and drain of probable 17th century date. Landfill above this contained a mixture of pottery, glass cullet, clay pipe and fragments of stoneware kiln furniture, finds ranging from 17th to 19th century date.[Au] |
