Abstract:
Seven trial trenches were excavated in the former William Baker premises. An earlier desk-based assessment had indicated that the site was probably located within the religious and secular precinct of The Newarke, a chantry, which contained the Trinity Hospital, Chantry College and Collegiate Church of St Mary. Founded in the mid 14th century it was deprived of its chantry status in 1547. A number of archaeological features and layers were uncovered across the site including substantial stone walls encountered to the south-east and north-east corresponding with the precincts west and north wall and a stone-lined conduit to the south-west, which seemed to form part of the documented Newarke Street conduits. All the trenches contained substantial modern overburden of varying thickness, but deeply stratified medieval layers were observed in only two trenches. Although limited in range and quantity, the finds were compatible with those from a site continually occupied from the medieval to present. Finds of note included moulded architectural stone, post-medieval pottery and a small quantity of medieval pottery. [Au(abr)]
