Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of two trial trenches (18.5m by 2m and 2m by 2m), was undertaken following the granting of Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent prior to the proposed construction of a new village hall. The development was located within a moated site which was part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Sapcote Castle, located in the centre of Sapcote village. The results of the evaluation revealed the presence of archaeoloical deposits associated with the backfilling of the late medieval moat and the remains of buried soil layers, which were possibly cut by the moat.
