Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken ahead of the proposed installation of electricity cables. It was clear that significant remains were present within the study area, the density of sites being within the western part of the area. The majority of the sites were cropmarks detected by aerial photography, and their density suggested a long and complex pattern of settlement within the area. The villages of Monk Fyrston, Hillam, Birkin, Burton Salmon, Sherburn-in-Elmet, Lumby and South Milford were identified as being archaeologically sensitive and thus should be avoided. Several deserted villages, monastic granges, moated sites, a possible cemetery and a castle motte were also identified. The large number of archaeological sites would have increased the difficulty of installing the electricty cables, a route which would have had the least impact on the archaeological resource was identified and recommended.
