Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring observed a mass of mortared stonework lying between the eastern abutments of the Aldin Grange Bridges and apparently pre-dating the older bridge, a Scheduled Ancient Monument thought to date to the early 15th century. It is possible that the stonework represented the abutment of an earlier bridge at a location whre there is documentary evidence for a crossing as early as 1370. No archaeological deposits were observed withi nthe modern cutting and no clay deposits likely to have been useable for pottery production were observed. A possible ancient buried ploughsoil was also observed. [Au(abr)] |
