Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for development work at the school. The archaeological potential in relation to the areas of proposed development could most accurately be described as variable. Few SMR records existed in close proximity to the school, but it was clear that the manor house and church represented the manorial focus of Stoke D'Abernon. The location of any associated settlement was, however, less clear, although there was nothing to suggest that it was within the immediate vicinity. The possible link of the site to earlier Roman activity was indicated by the presence of Roman material within the fabric of the church. It was possible that in this area by the Mole there was a settlement or even a Roman villa. It was difficult to gauge the degree of prehistoric activity in this area. The SMR seemed to indicate that the London Clay geology inhibited ancient settlement. The surrounding area, however, had not been subject to systematic archaeological fieldwork, and it was possible that the lack of archaeological evidence from this period was due to an absence of archaeological intervention associated with development and not to a paucity of ancient activity. The River Terrace deposits, on the other hand, had generally been a favoured location of prehistoric settlement elsewhere, but their potential in this area was less certain. The early cartographic and documentary evidence suggested that the early form of the manor house, at least from the 12th century onwards, was an E-shaped structure. It was unlikely that the area of the present proposed development would have been affected by the earlier medieval occupation of the site. The later maps examined showed the current area of development to have been part of the gardens to the north east of the main house, not covered by any structural development. The majority of the proposed 'Crescent Block' was thought to have been developed to an extent where any archaeological evidence that may have existed had been destroyed. It was only in the area of the new gardens, where archaeological deposits could survive in situ, and hence would be subject to impact from the proposed development work. Further evaluation in the form of trial trenching, was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
