Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the installation of a new gate-mechanism. A stretch of early walling was revealed running along the street frontage. This was probably part of the highwall thrown up by Archbishop Lanfranc in the 1070s around the enlarged precincts for his new palace. Immediately to the south this fabric abutted the earlier wall directly but further south it diverged from the boundary and was separated from it by make-up deposits. This foundation appeared to have been for the west wall of the Great Hall of the Archbishop, erected in the early 13th century. The hall was demolished c.1650, when the boundary wall was probably also razed and replaced by one with chalk block footings, itself replaced in brickwork, probably in the late 18th century. Portions of the eastern end of the hall were excavated and surveyed in the 1980s. [Au] |
