Abstract: |
A watching brief monitored works associated with the development of the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. In this case the work involved the clearing of drains and the laying of a new pipe to prevent flooding at the north end of Sandy Lane, along which the route of the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail ran. A layer of aggregate was also to be lain over a heavily rutted section of the track, but this did not require monitoring. Despite the fact that the work took place in the immediate vicinity of the Vallum, no significant archaeological deposits were recorded during the watching brief, since the work only disturbed modern topsoil layers, and no artefacts were recovered.
